In an international environment such as the BMS, a good understanding for one another is the most important basis for clear and respectful communication. This is an extra challenge for many people moving to a new country who might face many cultural differences and new situations.

In this training, we aim to give our new international students some tools to navigate situations in which they might face cultural differences or misunderstandings. We put some emphasis on the German academic system but also define cultural differences not just based on nationality but also other factors like age, family history, personal experiences and preferences.

We explain a few basic concepts of intercultural communication and analyze examples of common misunderstandings in university life. All students have the opportunity to talk about their own experiences and work together in groups.
Our goal is for each person to reflect on their own norms and expectations, gain a better understanding of other people's expectation and practice some tools to navigate these.
