Phd in mathMathematics of Multiscale Phenomena

September 1-12, 2008

at FU Berlin

You can find an updated schedule of the summer school program here.

The Summer School will provide an introduction to the theory of multiscale methods, and the techniques of averaging and homogenization and associated numerical techniques in particular. The theory will be exemplified by application to ordinary and stochastic differential equations, Markov chains and partial differential equations.

The course will comprise 4 introductory lectures on each of the following fields:

1) “Multiscale Problems for ODEs und SDEs” (A. Stuart, Warwick; C. Lubich, Tübingen)
2) “Effective Dynamics and Rare Events”, (E. Vanden Eijnden, New York; C. Schütte, Berlin)
3) “Essential behaviour of many-particle systems” (A. Mielke, Berlin; H. Yserentant, Berlin)
4) “PDEs on complex domains: Analysis and Numerics” (C. Elliott, Warwick; R. Kornhuber, Berlin).

There will also be several guest lectures by experts in multiscale phenomena. These will cover applications and theory.

The summer school is aimed primarily at graduate students from mathematics and statistics, but will also be of interest to students working in closely allied areas. Furthermore, postdoctoral and young researchers are also encouraged to attend. For participants with children of up to to 6 years, there will be day care opportunites.

Course material for the introductory lectures will be available in early summer 2008.

Guest Lecturers will include M. Dellnitz, G. Eyink, M. Griebel (tbc), K. Gröchenig, M. Junk, C. Lasser, A. Majda, G. Gassner, O. Widlund.

During the period of Aug. 17 to Sept. 12, 2008, there will be a parallel summer school on “Multiscale Problems in Fluid Dynamics and Meteorology” hosted by the DFG priority program 1276 (http://metstroem.mi.fu-berlin.de/). Lectures and tutorials will be partially shared between the two summer schools.

Applications were accepted until June 30, 2008. The BMS offers subsidiary financial support to selected participants to cover travel and accommodation costs.

BMS students apply for the summer school just by sending a formless application including a letter of interest to Mariusz Szmerlo ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) until June 30, 2008.
